When to DIY vs call a handyman in Broadstairs: honest advice

Not every small job is worth paying a handyman for, and not every job is really DIY. The honest split depends on the tools you have, the time you have, and whether the job has hidden failure modes. Here is the frame we use when owners ask us.

The DIY jobs

Genuine DIY territory for a competent adult with a basic tool kit: hanging pictures, putting up flat-pack furniture where the instructions are clear, changing a light bulb (obviously), changing a smoke alarm battery, tightening a loose door handle, replacing a toilet roll holder, silicone bath edge if you have done it before, changing a tap washer if you have done it before, painting a single wall. All of that a handyman is happy for you to do yourself. Do not pay us to do work you can do in less time than it takes to book us.

The maybe-DIY jobs

Middle ground where it depends. Assembly of a big flat-pack wardrobe (PAX with internals): DIY if you have half a day and have done one before, £180 for us to do it if you have not. Wall-mount a large TV on a solid wall: doable DIY if you have a stud finder and a heavy-duty drill, £120 for us if you do not. Small tap replacement: doable DIY if you have the tools and you have isolated the supply, £90 for us if you have not. If you would need to buy the tool for the job, we probably come out cheaper on the day.

The call-us jobs

Genuine handyman territory. Multi-item punch list (six or more small items in one visit): batching saves money, we clear the lot in one call-out. Anything on a ladder above single-storey reach: two-hand safety rules apply, and the cost of getting hurt is significantly more than the cost of the visit. Anything on the Broadstairs Regency or Victorian stock where the wrong screw in the wrong place cracks period render or plaster: expensive to fix afterward. Timber repair work where a bad patch dates the frontage. Salt-air hardware replacement where fitting the wrong grade throws away the work in three years.

The stop-DIY jobs

Jobs that need a certified specialist and where DIY is either illegal or actively dangerous. Any gas work: Gas Safe registered engineer only, criminal offence otherwise. Notifiable Part P electrical work (new circuits, consumer units, kitchen or bathroom circuits): Registered Electrician only, invalidates your insurance if you DIY. Structural work: proper builder or structural engineer. Roofing work above small ladder-reach: proper roofer with scaffold. Anything involving asbestos (older Broadstairs stock may have asbestos in artex ceilings, floor tiles, or older insulation): licenced removal only.

The Broadstairs-specific gotchas

Some things that look DIY in inland Kent are not DIY on the Broadstairs seafront belt. Fitting an outdoor light: DIY-legal, but if you fit an IP44-rated fitting in a sea-facing position it dies in two years - needs to be IP66 minimum. Painting an exterior sill: DIY-doable, but if you use an inland-spec paint it fails in 18 months rather than five years. Replacing a garden gate hinge: DIY-legal, but if you fit a zinc-plated hinge inside half a mile of the sea it rusts through in three years. The material spec matters as much as the labour.

The honest cost frame

There is no minimum call-out - you pay a flat £45 an hour for the time the job actually takes. For a genuinely quick job, DIY can still win on cost if you already have the tools and the skill. For anything longer we usually come out even or cheaper because we already have the tools, the material specs, and the coastal-belt hardware sitting in the van. And for anything on a ladder or requiring a specialist skill, the calculation is not just cost: it is the cost of doing it wrong.
