Two problems specific to the town. First: the salt easterlies drive leaves, dust and gull feathers into the gutter mouth in one direction, then bake the mix into a salt-crusted crust that sits above the outlet. Standard once-a-year clear is not enough on the seafront belt: twice a year (autumn and late spring) is the working number. Second: cast-iron guttering on the older Regency and Victorian stock in Viking Bay and St Peter's is often on brackets that have been in the wall 60 to 100 years, and the render behind the bracket has failed. First sign is the gutter starting to sag mid-span. That is a bracket-in-the-wall problem, not a gutter problem.
Standard single-elevation clear-and-check runs £80 to £140. Extended ladder work (two-storey rear elevation, three-storey front elevation) adds £30 to £60. We clear the run, check the fall, test the outlet flow with a hose, and photograph the finished state for the owner's records. Standard visit for a holiday-let owner ahead of the autumn or spring season.
Cracked or split gutter section (usually from freeze-thaw or from someone standing on the run) replaced like-for-like in matching profile. £120 to £280 including material, per section. Colour-matched black or white PVC-U on the modern stock, cast-iron or aluminium replacement on the period stock. Cast-iron replacement runs longer and costs more: allow £180 to £350 per section.
Blocked downpipe (leaves, gull nest material, occasionally a tennis ball) cleared £60 to £120 depending on access. Downpipe replacement per storey £90 to £180. Shoe replacement at ground level £40 to £70. Rainwater diverter fitted for water-butt use £60 to £110.
Where the gutter is at end-of-life across a full elevation, full replacement makes more sense than sectional patching. £400 to £900 for a standard two-storey rear elevation depending on material, height and access. Site visit before quote for any full elevation work.
